Jack-O-Lantern Lore
There is a story that has been passed down through several centuries that says The Jack-O-Lantern arrived in this country from Ireland. Irish legend says that a blacksmith by the name of Jack sold his soul to the devil for financial gain. When it came time to pay the devil with his soul, he became afraid and trapped the devil in a pear tree. For this evil deed he was barred from Heaven and was sent straight to Hell. The devil was still embarrassed over falling for being trapped in a pear tree and kicked him out of Hell. Jack was in a rush to escape this firey inferno but stopped long enough to scoop up a lump of burning coal, which he placed in a pumpkin. The story says he used this as a lantern while wondering around the earth waiting for his final Judgment Day. During his travels he arrived at America and the Jack-O-Lantern became popular. Rumor has it that he still wanders the earth to this day.

I got this information about the Jack-O-Lantern from a friend who lives in Ireland and told this as a story to her young child. I am not sure how long this piece of lore has been passed down from family to family or where it truly originated.
