Kingston Trio/Smothers Brothers Concert

Everyone starts somewhere and I remember to this day my first interviews with entertainers. I would be writing a preview story for a show with the Kingston Trio opening for the Smothers brothers.

I was new to writing for a newspaper; as a matter of fact this would be my first article and first interviews. And I almost missed out!

I didn’t take the newspapers early deadline into account or the entertainer’s schedules so I only had five days to get interviews and write a story. No one in the office thought I could pull an interview off this late but I was determined and the phase “you can’t do it” tends to drive me to succeed.

My story was due Tuesday at 9 a.m. “no exceptions.” As I lined up by first interview and the momentary high wore off when I succeeded, I realized I had no clue on what to ask in an interview much less talk to performers who had worked in the industry for over 40 years. I turned to the resident news reporter who interview at least two people a day and asked for advice.

With a slow smile, Alice answered my questions and gave me an idea of what I should do. I had a day to line up my questions and research both groups of performers so I would be able to ask intelligent questions.

I knew the Kingston Trios songs but not their history so I needed to do a lot of digging here.

The Smothers Brothers were a favorite of my fathers so I knew their material frontward and backwards.

I have to admit my first interview with George Grove from the Kingston trio was a little rough. I was nervous and it showed but thankfully George had a great sense of humor and I was able to pick up original information about the band and its members.

Dick Smothers was amazing. He has such warmth and personality and the love he had for working with his brother showed. Tommy Smothers was actually the one who wanted to do a comedy act and Dick finally agreed. During his interview he gave the credit for their success to his brother. We also talked about the challenges of working with family and being in a tough profession for so many years.

Both groups of performers remarked how its tough to stay current with the trends and still relate to your beginning.

This was five years ago and I cannot remember how many interviews I have done since that time. What I have learned from these interviews is that there is the main story you tell and the small glimmers you put into a story to make the performers real people.

I met the Kingston Trio and Smothers Brothers again last summer after a concert and attended a meet and greet for both groups. I have to admit that of all the groups I have interviewed the warmth and true humor from these entertainers make them one of my best interviews and truly remarkable people.
