St. Patrick's Day and it's legendary past
St. Patrick’s day is quite popular in my area and celebrated with many parties. You will see Shamrock plants in all the stores in celebration of the day and that is rather odd in many ways as the Shamrock plant is not originally from Ireland but from Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. St. Patrick was born in Britain as Maewyn Succat in 387 AD. He was fathered by a Roman officer and went to Ireland in 432 as a missionary. His goal was to convert the people to Christianity. Legend states that he drove the snakes from Ireland. many people thought he actually made snakes leave, but this really means that he drove the Druids, the shaman and magicians of the Celts from the Green Isle. He died in 461 on March 8 or March 9. Because no agreement could be reached on which day he died, they added the sum of the two days up and the holiday is celebrated on March 17th. Fact and lore have mixed with St. Patrick and stories need to be looked at to see which are true or exagerated. The first St. Patrick's day was celebrated in the U.S. in Boston in 1737. Is it still one of the more popular holidays in America.
